Meet Your Trainer
Joe V. Nguyen
Master Barber · SMP Master Artist Trainer · Founder, SMPCA Academy. 20+ years behind the chair, 10 years running one of the Bay Area's busiest private SMP studios in San Lorenzo, CA.
I built SMPCA Academy to teach this craft the way I wish I'd learned it: hands-on, honest, and focused on real results for both the artist and the client. Five students per training, max. Direct coaching from me. No watching from the back.

Common Questions
FAQ
I'm a barber, not an artist — can I actually learn this?+
Most of the best SMP artists I know came from behind the chair. You already have the hand control, the hairline eye, and the head/face proportion sense — that's the foundation that took you years to build. The pigment work itself is teachable in days. If you can cut a clean fade, you can learn this.
Will I be certified and licensed to perform SMP after training?+
Yes on both — and they're two different things. Certification is the credential from SMPCA Academy proving you completed the training, and you leave the training with it in hand. Licensing is the legal side: in California, no medical license required, but you do need a Body Art Practitioner permit from your county (Alameda County for the East Bay — similar process elsewhere), a blood-borne pathogen course, and a health inspection of your workspace. I walk every student through the exact permit application during the training, so you leave ready to take paying clients legally.
How much do I start charging each client for SMP?+
Portfolio-building phase (your first ~10 heads): $800–$1,500 per client, depending on the case. Hairline-only sits at the low end; a full Norwood crown sits higher. Once you have 10–15 finished heads to show, you move toward market rate: $2,500–$5,000+ per client in the Bay Area, with each treatment usually 2–3 sessions quoted as one package. Even at the bottom of the starter range, one SMP client pays you what 20–40 haircuts pay. That's the whole point. We'll do the math on YOUR numbers on the call.
How much is the SMP in-person training?+
Straight answer: I quote it live on the call, not on the page. Reason — what you pay depends on what's included (deposit options, financing path, ongoing mentorship after the training), and walking through that one-on-one is faster than reading a wall of text on a website. What you should know going in: it's the kind of investment that pays itself back in your first 1–2 paying clients. Bring your real budget question to the call and we'll talk through what works for you.
How long have you been doing SMP — and how do I know your training is the real deal?+
Doing SMP since 2016 — 10 years running my private studio in San Lorenzo, 1,500+ clinical clients on record, and over 20 years behind the chair as a California-licensed Master Barber before that. I'm also a Body Art Practitioner permitted through Alameda County. Five students max per training. Direct coaching from me, not a senior student or assistant. Real studio you can come visit in person before you put a deposit down — most prospective students do. Bring your sharpest questions to the call.
Is financing available?+
Yes — most students don't pay the full amount upfront. Common paths: a deposit-now / balance-before-training split, third-party financing through Affirm or Klarna (you check eligibility in seconds at checkout, no impact to your credit score), or a custom plan if you have a specific situation (active military, recent licensure change, etc.). The goal is to make the path doable, not push a one-size-fits-all plan. We'll match the option to your actual numbers on the call.
How do I get started?+
Easy. Pick a time on the calendar above, show up to the Zoom call, and we'll walk through your situation, your timeline, and whether the next training makes sense for you. If it's a fit, I walk you through enrollment then. If it's not, you leave with a clear picture of what your path actually looks like. No card needed to book, no pressure either way — but the calendar fills up, so grab the slot when you have one open.
